Hugo Gernsback said today that Mr. Paul had provided much art work, including highly imaginative covers, for such Gernsback magazines as Amazing Stories, Science and Invention, and Radio-Electronics.

Training in architectural and mechanical draftsmanship, the publisher said, gave authenticity to Mr. Paul's pictures of fictional devices. A freelance, he had illustrated textbooks for New York publishers, and had executed private commissions for murals.

Born near Vienna, Mr. Paul studied art there and in London and Paris. In early life he had been a political cartoonist on The New Jersey Journal in Jersey City. During World War II he worked as a draftsman in shipyards in Florida and California.

Surviving are his widow, the former Rudolpha C. Rigelsen; a son, Robert S. Paul; and three daughters, Mrs. Frances Hoag, Mrs. Joan Engle, and Mrs. Patricia Huston.
